As some of you know, my friend's 18-year old little brother underwent the replacement of the mitral valve due to congenital heart disease. It is not going well and it is in God's hands. Another friend's husband had his ilieostomy reversed and is doing very, very well. That was also in God's hands.

I get so wrapped up in what is going on around me that I sometimes do not stop and reflect that I have so very much to be thankful for. Here are my top 5:

Sasha Wants Some Cake

Sasha has been down the last few days and we aren't sure why. Something about how Grandma always makes the good treats for other peeps. Something about cooking the yummy smelling cake all day and not evening letting her lick the frosting bowl. Not too mention being kicked out of the kitchen during the whole process.

Well, this is the finished cake that my mom made for a lady in our church. The cake was red velvet and the white frosting was cream cheese so piping details weren't easy to do with this kind of frosting. The little hearts and flowers are edible and she made them, too.

Sasha is just pouting thinking a cake that yummy smelling and good looking shouldn't go out our door. But, it did.

When your pet gets a Torn Nail

This is a common problem. It isn't life-threatening but can be quite an episode. When a nail is torn and bleeding it can bleed a lot. Not only is the sight of blood very upsetting (it's enough to send a dog lover into a panic) but it can get all over and is really terrible to clean. Second, it hurts and often the dog doesn't allow the owner (or the owner doesn't know how) to try to bandage it or fix it.

What can you do?

In the case of a torn nail, try not to panic. You can try to treat your dog at home, but remember: a torn nail is painful for your dog and you should take care to avoid getting bit.

The following steps are important:

1. Initially, you will have to stop the bleeding. You can use silver nitrate or styptic pencils. If you don't have either of these, try cornstarch or flour. When placed on a bleeding nail, these generally stop the bleeding. Be aware that they can sting, so don't be surprised if your dog vocalizes when you apply the powder.

2. Removing the loose nail is the most difficult part of caring for the torn nail. Most often, you can just pull the loose piece of nail off very quickly. If the nail doesn't come off easily, you can try to use a pet nail trimmer and remove the nail at the level of the break. If you are not confident in your ability to remove the broken nail safely, wait and have a veterinarian do it. Without experience, you may end up hurting your dog more than you realize.

3. If you successfully remove the damaged part of the nail, gently wash the area with warm water to remove any debris lodged between the nail and the toe or leg.

4. Apply a temporary bandage if necessary for bleeding. Remove it in 24 hours.

To be honest, treating a torn nail can be difficult to do at home and I've seen people bit and dogs injured. If you do not feel comfortable taking care of a torn nail, call your veterinarian.

Leaving a torn nail to heal on its own (which will not happen) or allowing the nail to grow out is not a recommended option. This causes persistent irritation and possible repeat breaks. It's very important to keep your dog's nails trimmed, both for your safety and theirs.

Five (5) lessons about the way we treat people:

1 - First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady.
During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one:
"What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"
Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50's, but how would I know her name?
I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.
"Absolutely, " said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello."
I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

2. - Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain
One night, at 11:30 p..m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride.
Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car.
A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960's. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab.
She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached. It read:
"Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's' bedside just before he passed away... God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others."

3 - Third Important Lesson - Always remember those who serve.
In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.
"How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked.
"Fifty cents," replied the waitress.
The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.
"Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired.
By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.
"Thirty-five cents," she brusquely replied.
The little boy again counted his coins.
"I'll have the plain ice cream," he said.
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies.
You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

4 - Fourth Important Lesson. - The obstacle in Our Path.
In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway.. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the King's' wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.
Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded.
After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand!
Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

5 - Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When it Counts...
Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.
I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded.
He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away".
Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

Most importantly....
Live with no regrets,
Treat people the way you want to be treated,
Work like you don't need the money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
and
Dance like you do when nobody's watching.

Sasha And Sunshine!

Hi all it's me Sasha. Mommy said I could do the team blog tonight cause she didn't knows whats to blog about. So here I is in Mommy's human sized snuggle sack. I was just minding my own business trying to keep warm when I felt this warmness embrace my cold little wiener dog body. Almost thought for a moment that Charlie wet the snuggle sack, but I knows he doesn't do that kind of thing. Then, I peeked my head out and there was sunshine. Lots of it, too.

So I wents to my favorite lookout point to see if the sun was really shining. It was and so I called Charlie over cause you know his old bones needs lots of sun to keep warm. That and his butt makes a good pillow. But, don't tells him that.

Hey, Mommy put down that book and look the snow is starting to melt. The sharp ice daggers that hang from the roof started to fall and make weird sounds. So I had to woof at them to let them know that any squirrels they happen to accidentally squish will be mine once the back gate is open again for us to play in the backyard. Which at this rate should be around June. heehee.

Well, Mommy wouldn't put down her book to look at the melting snow and falling ice daggers so I decided to get comfortable. You gots to work on your doxie sun tan whenever you can in the winter you knows.

Aw, this is a good doxie life. Now where did my Charlie butt pillow go off to now?

The excitement your dog feels when he plays with a squeaky toy is instinctual - it goes back to a time when dogs had to hunt and kill prey to survive. Hunting is just a natural part of being a dog. The squeaky noises of prey animals would help dogs locate their prey - and the noises the prey animals made during the kill were very satisfying to a hungry dog.

"Hunting" a squeaky toy gives your dog the same type of satisfaction. And the more the toys squeaks, the more excited your dog becomes. That's why so many dogs will try to "kill" the toy by destroying it and pulling out the squeaker.

A good squeaky toy can provide lots of fun play and mental stimulation for your dog. They're excellent toys. But when you purchase a squeaky toy for your dog, make sure to put safety first.

Make sure the toy does not have a lot of pieces that can be chewed off and swallowed. Look for features (eyes, nose, etc.) that are embroidered onto the toy, not attached. Also, once your dog chews through the toy, he could swallow the squeaker or the fiberfill stuffing inside. This can be very dangerous. That's why it is so important to supervise your dog's play.

Coyote Sightings!

This article is adapted from the one I wrote for a local paper just last week. I thought it might be interesting in light of the coyote posts in the forum.

Several years ago, I was running through the woods behind the Kent State Campus next to the fairgrounds. I have run the course many dozens of times. This particular day, however, held an unusual surprise. As I was running along the thickly wooded section of the path, I rounded a bend and was met by four long-legged, tawny canines. They were no more than 15 feet away. We stared at each other for several seconds. It was only a short encounter, then they bounded away. But I have never forgotten their faces and the four pairs of eyes that met mine that day. No snarls, no evil eyes. Just beautiful wild dogs out on a hunt or perhaps a morning stroll.

There have been many coyote sightings and many more coyote howls heard throughout Geauga County. I thought it might be interesting to learn a bit more about them and their way of life.

- Coyote parents may supply live mice to their pups for hunting practice.

- Coyotes are native only to North America.

- When coyotes are about two years old, they select a mate and stay with that mate for life.

- When hunting, coyotes sometimes pursue prey in relays, enabling packs to run down animals that could escape a single coyote. The list of prey able to escape a coyote is short - this is due to the fact that these animals can run in bursts as fast as 40 miles per hour and they also can jump over a 8' fence. These animals can also travel up to 400 miles at a stretch, stopping only occasionally to howl for news.
- In 2006, a coyote was spotted in New York's Central Park.

- Coyotes use at least 10 different sounds to communicate, not counting their familiar yapping howl.
- In states with mountains, the coyote are more muscular.
- They do not hibernate and are very active during the winter months. Coyotes bed in sheltered areas, but do not use dens except when raising young, during severe weather or when they are being chased. Dens will have an entrance about a foot in diameter and are usually holes that have been used first by another animal like badgers or foxes.
- Coyotes can live and have adapted to virtually all types of habitat. From arctic to tropic, country to cities, desert to tundra.
- It is estimated that at least 400,000 coyotes are killed each year (one coyote is killed every minute) by federal, state, and local governments but also by private individuals.
- Coyotes can breed with both domestic dogs and wolves. A dog-coyote mix is called a "coydog".
- The great majority of coyotes don't prey upon livestock. However, once a coyote learns that young livestock are easy prey, depredation can become a problem. If this occurs, removal of the offending coyote is often recommended.

I actually told him to stay so I could get the camera. I took some pics, and when I came back, more than 5 minutes later he was still in this position.
Well, I couldn''t leave our Gianna out, or DaVinci, so I added this picture I thought was funny.
Gianna likes to lie down right under the bird, DaVinci's, play gym, so she can be the first at any food he drops.
I think sometimes DaVinci tries to aim his food and toys so they fall right on top of her.

Earlier this week, my sweet beagle, Velvet, was not feeling well. My first clue was that she didn't inhale her food at meal time. I took her to the vet and she got a shot and some medicine and is all better now. This little video is not of Velvet, a beagle, or even a dog, but I thought it was cute cause its something Velvet would do. I'm happy to have my little chow hound back to normal :)

Tail Chasing in Dogs

Have you ever felt you were "chasing your own tail"? The expression, of course, is derived from the seemingly pointless activity that dogs engage in every now and again.

Why do dogs do it? In the last 10 years, tail chasing has been regarded as a symptom of a compulsive disorder, much like compulsive self-licking. This implies that the dog has some genetic predisposition toward this behavior when in situations of anxiety or conflict.

Tail chasing tends to be confined to certain breeds, which is evidence in support of a genetic predisposition. One study showed that the vast majority of tail-chasing dogs were of bull terrier or

Conflict underlies tail chasing in dogs. Conflict can take the form of confinement, social isolation, adversarial situations with people or other animals, and lack of opportunity to perform species-typical behavior.

Tail chasing may begin as a "displacement behavior." The dog finds himself in some dilemma he can't resolve, and displaces his anxiety into a behavior that has nothing to do with the problem. Tail chasing is believed to derive from dogs' natural predatory instincts. They may see their tail as something that isn't part of them, and something worth chasing and catching. Chasing the tail may provide dogs some relief from their conflict because it fills a behavioral vacuum.

Dogs exhibiting compulsive tail chasing often have other compulsive behaviors. For example, bull terriers may also pace in wide circles or show compulsive behavior towards objects such as tennis balls.

Affected German shepherds often engage in compulsive pacing and circling behavior, too, including running in large figure eights. A tail chaser that is physically prevented from tail chasing is likely to displace into some other repetitive compulsive behavior.

Tuesday thoughts - The Brick

THE BRICK

A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something.

As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag's side door!

He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car shouting, 'What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?'

The young boy was apologetic. 'Please, mister....please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to do,' He pleaded. 'I threw the brick because no one else would stop...' With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car.. 'It's my brother,' he said, 'he rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up.'

Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, 'Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me.'

Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything was going to be okay 'Thank you and may God bless you,' the grateful child told the stranger. Too shook up for words, the man simply watched the boy push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home.

It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar.. The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message:
'Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention!' God whispers in our souls and speaks to our hearts. Sometimes when we don't have time to listen, He has to throw a brick at us. It's our choice to listen or not.

I was looking for a picture to communicate putting 2011 behind me and that would also express my hope for the upcoming year. I came across the photo above and thought it was absolutely perfect. The editorial that went with the photo spoke to me, also, as a wonderful approach to dealing with the old and looking forward to the new. Please take a minute to read it by clicking here.

Our team members have had their share of ups and downs this past year, but I think we have all become so much closer as a result. I, for one, lost my husband of 25 years to colon cancer on Valentine's Day. Its been a struggle, its been devastating and unbearable at times, but with the help and support of my family and my friends on PetsJubilee, and elsewhere, I've managed to survive the last 11 months and become a little bit stronger over time. My husband always liked to say, "what doesn't kill me, makes me stronger", and I try to look at the difficult times like hurdles to be dealt with and conquered. I try to find the silver lining in all things and believe that everything happens for a reason. I'm a glass half full type of person. I pray everyday and give thanks for all that I have in my life. Being this type of person allows me to embrace the New Year and grow stronger and wiser from the lessons learned during the old year. So,

The Geese

There was once a man who didn't believe in the incarnation of Christ or the spiritual meaning of Christmas, and was skeptical about God.

He and his family lived in a farm community. His wife was a devout believer and diligently raised her children in her faith. He sometimes gave her a hard time about her faith and mocked her observance of Christmas. "It's all nonsense - why would God lower himself and become a human like us?! It's such a ridiculous story!" he said.

One snowy day, she and the children left for church while he stayed home. After they had left, the winds grew stronger and the snow turned into a blinding snowstorm. He sat down to relax before the fire for the evening.

Then he heard a loud thump, something hitting against the window. And another thump. He looked outside but couldn't see. So he ventured outside to see. In the field near his house he saw, of all the strangest things, a flock of geese! They were apparently flying to look for a warmer area down south, but had been caught in the snow storm.

The storm had become too blinding and violent for the geese to fly or see their way. They were stranded on his farm, with no food or shelter, unable to do more than flutter their wings and fly in aimless circles.

He had compassion for them and wanted to help them. He thought to himself, "The barn would be a great place for them to stay! It's warm and safe; surely they could spend the night and wait out the storm."

So he opened the barn doors for them. He waited, watching them, hoping they would notice the open barn and go inside. But they didn't notice the barn or realize what it could mean for them. He moved closer toward them to get their attention, but they just moved away from him out of fear. He went into the house and came back out with some bread, broke it up, and made a bread trail to the barn. They still didn't catch on.

Starting to get frustrated, he went over and tried to shoo them toward the barn. They panicked and scattered into every direction except toward the barn. Nothing he did could get them to go into the barn where there was warmth, safety and shelter.

Feeling totally frustrated, he exclaimed, "Why don't they follow me? Can't they see this is the only place where they can survive the storm? How can I possibly get them into the one place to save them?" He thought for a moment and realized that they just wouldn't follow a human. He said to himself, "How can I possibly save them? The only way would be for me to become like those geese. If only I could become like one of them! Then I could save them! They would follow me and I would lead them to safety."

At that moment, he stopped and considered what he had said. The words reverberated in his mind: "If only I could become like one of them - then I could save them." And then, at last, he understood God's heart towards mankind, and he fell on his knees in the snow and worshipped Him.

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We beheld His Glory, the Glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of Grace and Truth!" (John 1:14)

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

One Pound Deer

Found in an e-mail from Pauline from paulinesfashions.

This tiny deer was delivered by Caesarean section at a

Wildlife hospital after a car killed his mother.

Little Rupert, who is so small he can fit in an adult's hand,

was born after vets failed in their battle to save his mother.

At just 6" tall and weighing just over a pound, he is now

in an incubator in the intensive care unit at Tiggywinkles

Wildlife Hospital in Buckinghamshire.

He has only recently opened his eyes.

Les Stocker, founder of Tiggywinkles, said, "Rupert's

mother had very severe injuries. We brought him out and

got him breathing, and then he went into an incubator on

oxygen. He is now being fed by a tube"
Staff members are optimistic that Rupert, now 5 days old,

will make a full recovery.
"Deer are very, very tricky, but this one has spirit. He's an

extremely feisty, Little guy and quite pushy," Mr. Stocker said.

The Envelope

It's just a small white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past 10 years or so. It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas -- oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the commercial aspects of it -- the overspending, the frantic running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and the dusting powder for Grandma -- the gifts given in desperation because you couldn't think of anything else.

Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to bypass the usual shirts, sweaters, ties, and so forth. I reached for something special just for Mike. The inspiration came in an unusual way. Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling at the junior level at the school he attended. Shortly before Christmas, there was a non-league match against a team sponsored by an inner-city church.

These youngsters, dressed in sneakers so ragged that shoestrings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, presented a sharp contrast to our boys in their spiffy blue and gold uniforms and sparkling new wrestling shoes. As the match began, I was alarmed to see that the other team was wrestling without headgear, a kind of light helmet designed to protect a wrestler's ears. It was a luxury the ragtag team obviously could not afford.

Well, we ended up walloping them. We took every weight class. And as each of their boys got up from the mat, he swaggered around in his tatters with false bravado, a kind of street pride that couldn't acknowledge defeat.

Mike, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, "I wish just one of them could have won," he said. "They have a lot of potential, but losing like this could take the heart right out of them." Mike loved kids -- all kids -- and he knew them, having coached little league football, baseball, and lacrosse.

That's when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought an assortment of wrestling headgear and shoes and sent them anonymously to the inner-city church. On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Mike what I had done and that this was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and in succeeding years.

For each Christmas, I followed the tradition -- one year sending a group of mentally handicapped youngsters to a hockey game, another year a check to a pair of elderly brothers whose home had burned to the ground the week before Christmas, and on and on. The envelope became the highlight of our Christmas. It was always the last thing opened on Christmas morning, and our children, ignoring their new toys, would stand with wide-eyed anticipation as their dad lifted the envelope from the tree to reveal its contents.

As the children grew, the toys gave way to more practical presents, but the envelope never lost its allure. The story doesn't end there. You see, we lost Mike last year due to cancer. When Christmas rolled around, I was still so wrapped in grief that I barely got the tree up. But Christmas Eve found me placing an envelope on the tree, and in the morning it was joined by three more. Each of our children, unbeknownst to the others, had placed an envelope on the tree for their dad. The tradition has grown and someday will expand even further with our grandchildren standing around the tree with wide-eyed anticipation watching as their fathers take down the envelope.

Mike's spirit, like the Christmas spirit, will always be with us. May we all remember Christ, who is the reason for the season, and the true Christmas spirit this year and always.

PJ Team Holiday Gift Exchange Part Two

My oldest daughter just celebrated her 25th birthday, and one of her gifts was this cute little hat and collar for her furbaby, Julia. I just love the look on Julia's face. It took so much effort to get her to keep the hat on and finally she just gave in. It was kind of like, "ok, mamma, I don't like it, but I will do this for you." The hat stayed on just long enough to get this picture.

Sugarless Gum May be Good for us Humans, but Deadly for Dogs

A friend of a friend recently had to put their 18-month old Golden Retriever down. What would fell an energetic and young dog? Sugarless gum. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used as a sweetner in mints, chewable vitamins, cookies and candy.

When the dog eats this sugar substitute, the body releases insulin. It is followed by a decrease in the natural glucose, or sugar, in the blood, which will cause hypoglycemia. Low blood sugar is what causes the fatigue and confusion, even seizures. Many other problems can cause these symptoms. All are serious and need medical attention.

In high doses, it can also cause liver damage. Liver tissue will actually start to die. In extreme cases it causes problems with the blood-clotting mechanism of the body, and that means the dog can bleed out. Unfortunately, not all dogs that suffer from acute liver failure will show any signs of illness. Or they appear sick, and then get better. Even if the pet appears fine, if they did ingest xylitol, they need to be seen immediately for treatment.

A cat died and went to Heaven. God met her at the gates and said, 'You have been a good cat all these years. Anything you want is yours for the asking.'

The cat thought for a minute and then said, 'All my life I lived on a farm and slept on hard wooden floors. I would like a real fluffy pillow to sleep on.'

God said, 'Say no more.' Instantly the cat had a huge fluffy pillow.

A few days later, six mice were killed in an accident and they all went to Heaven together. God met the mice at the gates with the same offer that He made to the cat.

The mice said, 'Well, we have had to run all of our lives: from cats, dogs, and even people with brooms! If we could just have some little roller skates, we would not have to run again.'

God answered, 'It is done.' All the mice had beautiful
little roller skates.

About a week later, God decided to check on the cat. He found her sound asleep on her fluffy pillow.. God gently awakened the cat and asked, 'Is everything okay? How have you been doing? Are you happy?'

The cat replied, 'Oh, it is WONDERFUL. I have never been so happy in my life.
The pillow is so fluffy, and those little Meals on Wheels you have been sending over are delicious!'

I also found this video, and the reason I was intrigued with it, is this is a Sinbad look-a-like (a Sun Conure) on the left and a DaVinci look-a-like (Moustache parrot) on the right.
((For those of you that do not know - Sinbad was a sun conure parrot I had that died last year at the age of 19. DaVinci is the bird I have now that I adopted a few months after Sinbad passed.)) This is not them, but just so wonderful for me to see this. To compare the 2, and the sizes are so similar, and to see them side by side like this.

The type of cold a dog suffers from is different from the type a human suffers from. The illness is not communicable between species — at least, one has not yet been discovered — so there is no need to worry about catching your dog’s cold, or vice versa.

If your dog is coughing or sneezing, but is in otherwise good health, you may be able to treat the condition as you would a simple human cold — with lots of liquids, healthy foods (Chicken soup, even? But of course! Just make sure to leave out the bones.), warmth, and maybe even some time in a warm and humid room. This can be done by placing a humidifier near his rest area or by filling the bathtub with steaming water and letting the dog hang out in the bathroom for a bit (not in the water), just to let the steam loosen up his sinuses and lungs.

If your dog is either very young or very old, it is best to have her looked over by your veterinarian, since dogs at either end of the age scale tend to have less capable immune systems and can suffer more as a result, and if symptoms don’t improve or appear to worsen, consult with your veterinarian.

You can help to prevent a cold by keeping her indoors during cold, wet weather, with just brief trips outside for relief. It isn’t the cold temperature that creates the illness, of course, but over exposure to unfriendly temperatures or environments can create a physical situation that makes it easier for a bacterial or viral germ to latch on and take hold in the body.

How to Take Christmas Card Photos of Your Pet

1. Choose a time when your pet is happy and relaxed. Most pets are calmer after mealtimes, or at certain times of day. This can take a little patience, depending on the pet--a snake is probably easier to photograph than an energetic puppy or curious kitten. Use your voice, treats, and toys to get a cute, inquisitive expression on your pet's face.

2. Plan to take many photos in order to get one or two really good ones. Digital photography makes this easy, so be sure you have plenty of room on your memory card and a charged battery. Don't think you need to take the perfect shot in a single session. Sometimes it takes several sessions to get that one great shot. Try to take photos in natural light, if possible.

3. Dress up your pet. Check the stores on this blog to find quality and fun holiday clothing. If your featured pet is a bird, reptile, or fish, why not decorate the cage or aquarium? Candy canes, wreaths, tinsel, and tree decorations can be artfully arranged to make a cute holiday environment for just about any caged pet.

4. Take close-up shots. A Christmas card will be much more effective if the subject fills the screen. To achieve a good close-up effect with a wider photo, use your digital software's "Zoom and Crop" feature.

5. Pay attention to background. A simple, uncluttered background is much more visually appealing than a cluttered, messy one. Use a colored blanket, Christmas quilt, or even a tablecloth as a backdrop. Outdoor shots in the snow are perfect if the weather cooperates.

6. Use your digital camera's editing software to enhance, brighten, or lighten not-so-perfect photographs.

7. Sign up with a store that prints holiday cards from your photos. This can be done online without even going to the store, or you can bring a picture CD to the store and use the on-site computer. This will allow you to add decorative borders and Christmas messages to your card for a professional look.
Have fun. If your pets are like my boys, they can be total hams. Enjoy the time you spend with them.

Sharing A Recliner With A Chi-Kitty!

Step one: Jump up in opposite corner from the chi kitty. Do not make eye contact. Ignore the snarls and evil glare from the glowing eyes.

Step Two: Turn around without touching the "cat blankie". Eww. I think I smell cat hair. Position oneself down wind and whatever you do, don't fluff or scratch at the spot prior to the down position.

Step Three: Get comfortable. But, not too cocky.

Step Four: Still avoid eye contact with Chi-kitty and let your mommy know that you don't like this situation one bit with the pitiful hound dog face.

The High Cost of Obese Dogs

As most of you know, I have two dogs - one long and lean and has a hard time keeping weight on. The other is short and stocky that gains weight easily. He's also the total chow hound. However both are energetic, well-exercised and well fed. I ran across this asrticle by Liz Weston, MSN Money and wanted to share on the eve of Thanksgiving. Be careful what you feed the pups this weekend. They are not used to high fat, high sodium, high sugar diets. A treat is one thing - consider turkey and not the skin, pumpkin without all pumpkin pie mixings, etc. Here's the article:

I was deeply offended when the vet said our dog was getting fat.

It's true his trim little waist had disappeared soon after he joined our household. But he certainly hadn't broadened out into the fur-covered coffee tables that our friends' golden retrievers had become.

"He's still a puppy," I protested, though he was nearly 2. "He's a growing dog."

The vet wisely didn't respond, "Yes, he's growing sideways." Instead, she suggested I feel his ribs.

I tried. I couldn't. Point taken.

Half of our dogs and cats are overweight, according to the latest Association for Pet Obesity Prevention study, and one in five is obese, with a body weight 30% or more above normal.

We may think our portly pets are cute, but vets tell us we're setting them up for a host of weight-related diseases and conditions, including:
Arthritis and other joint problems.
Disc disease and other back problems.
Torn and ruptured ligaments.
Diabetes.
High blood pressure.
Kidney disease.
Liver inflammation.
Asthma.
Lipomas (fat tumors).
Weight issues can shorten our pets' lives, and they cost us tens of millions of dollars in unnecessary pet bills every year, said veterinarian Ernie Ward, one of the association's founders.

"People come to me complaining about the high cost of veterinary care," Ward said, "and I tell them, 'Look no farther than the food bowl.'"

No one has done a definitive study of exactly how much fat pets cost their owners -- unlike the studies done about obese adults, which I covered in "What being fat is costing you." But Veterinary Pet Insurance, or VPI, the largest pet insurer and one that processes 1.1 million claims a year, estimates the nine most common weight-related diseases and problems cost its policyholders more than $28 million last year.

Not all of the conditions VPI tracked are exclusively weight-related. Just as you can have a normal-weight human diabetic, you can have a normal-weight animal diabetic. But you also should consider that VPI-covered pets constitute only one half of 1% of all U.S. pets. (Only about 1% of pets have medical insurance, and VPI has about half of that market.) So the real toll of weight-related vet costs actually could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Gianna, my little black dog, is obsessed with DaVinci, my moustache parrot. It looks like Gianna tries to bite the bird from the back, but as soon as the bird turns around Gianna backs up. This has been going on for a year now, and I am starting to relax a little when they are out together. I think they are playing, but I do watch them like a hawk. I wonder who would win in a fight.

Although it may be an uncomfortable subject, here are possible signs of canine cancer:

o Abnormal swellings that persist or continue to grow
o Sores that do not heal
o Weight loss
o Loss of appetite
o Bleeding or discharge from any body opening
o Offensive odor
o Difficulty eating or swallowing
o Hesitation to exercise or loss of stamina
o Persistent lameness or stiffness
o Difficulty breathing, urinating or defecating

Big advances have been made in veterinary medicine to treat cancer. Many dogs can live for years after treatment depending on the type of cancer. Any of the above symptoms should be checked by your veterinarian.

We all want our pets to live long, healthy lives – and we'd all do just about anything to ensure that our cats and dogs can stay with us as long as possible. What five things can you do to keep your pet safe, happy, and by your side longer? We've listed them below, and chances are, you're probably on top of them already.
But one hint may surprise you…

Keep your furry friend indoors. Staying inside, or at least on a leash, protects your pet from all kinds of dangers. Indoor living shields cats from infectious diseases; digestive upset caused by snacking on poisonous plants or other foreign objects; fights with other cats, dogs, wild animals, or mean humans; and speeding cars.

And as pets age, they can't regulate their body temperatures as effectively, making them more prone to serious weather-related ailments like heat stroke if they're outdoors too long.
Of course it's fine to walk your dog, and the occasional (closely supervised) feline foray into the yard isn't the end of the world. But it's particularly important for cats to do their toileting inside; that way, the humans can monitor them for signs of tummy upset, urinary-tract issues, and so on.

Putting a "catio" in your window for bird-watching purposes, and planting cat grass in pots, can bring the outside in -- without compromising Fluffy's health.

Watch his weightObesity in dogs and cats causes the same serious health problems that it does in humans – high blood pressure, breathing problems, diabetes, and joint pain. It's not easy to put a portly pet on a diet, but NOT doing so could shorten his lifespan (and from a practical – and more selfish – standpoint, you really don't want to have to give a cat daily insulin injections).
If your dog or cat is on the spherical side, enlist your vet's help to change his diet. Invest in new toys for your cat that will get him more active, and try switching from "free feeding" to controlled portions at specific meal times. Take dogs for longer or more frequent walks, and get strict about table scraps and extra biscuits.

Aging pets who have maintained normal weights for years may start to plump up as their metabolisms slow down. Changing your senior dog or cat's regular food to a formula that's higher in protein and lower in fat may help, and dogs may benefit from "nutriceutical" supplements. Again, consult with your vet.

Don't skip vetappointmentsIt's tempting to bail on the vet if your pet seems healthy – the exams, shots, and treatments can add up to a big yearly bill if you don't have pet insurance. But our pets can't tell us when they don't feel quite right, or whether that diarrhea is a passing thing or a symptom of something more serious. The vet CAN tell you – sometimes just by looking into your dog's eyes!
As your pet ages, you may need to bring her in more frequently – every six months, instead of every year – for senior-wellness check-ups. Your vet is trained to spot conditions and concerns you can't see, and catching geriatric diseases or cancer early is the best way to find a treatment that time – quality time – to your pet's life.

Dental health is overall healthMost of these tips are common sense – but the importance of taking care of your pet's teeth may come as a surprise. It's the most common major health problem affecting cats and dogs, actually; the bacteria from dental and gum disease can travel elsewhere in their bodies, causing more serious issues.

With that said, we understand that you feel ridiculous brushing your cat's teeth. (And your cat feels even more ridiculous.) But it might seem less absurd if it adds years to your kitty's life. Check your pet's teeth and gums about once a week, if you can. Feed kibble and treats that promote dental health, and keep an eye out for signs of dental or gum disease, including bad breath, lethargy, decreased appetite, weight loss, and facial swelling. Call the vet if you think your cat or dog is having trouble eating due to mouth or tooth pain.

And yes, brush your pet's teeth – using specially formulated brushes and pastes, not "people products." Some pets grow to love the fish-flavored toothpaste; others will fight you tooth and nail. (Forgive the pun.) Even if it's a battle, remind yourself that it's worth fighting – bad teeth can reduce your dog's lifespan 2-4 years in some cases.

Spay and neuter your petsSpaying or neutering your pet doesn't just prevent overpopulation. It can protect your pet down the line from various reproductive cancers – of the prostate and ovaries, for instance. And some studies have shown that fixed pets live longer than "intact" pets, although scientists aren't quite sure why.
We all love an adorable pile of puppies – but coo at pictures online, and get your pet spayed or neutered.

Show and Tell Tuesday - on bathing

It is very important that your pets are kept clean. Dirty cages, dirty living conditions, dirty and matted fur, dirty feathers, can all lead to serious health issues.

It is important that your pet bird get baths. Outside they do this in puddles, or in the rain. But in captivity we have to make sure we offer them water to bathe in. Sometimes they do not take to bathing themselves. In that case, you must spray them. You can use luke warm water, or they sell bath spray at the pet stores. Most birds do not like to get sprayed, but it is necessary.

DaVinci would not bathe himself. I tried many different shape and depth bathing dishes, but he just would not. So I had to spray him, and he did not like the spray. He tolerated certain sprays, but not others.

Well a week ago I was cleaning his bird gym, and he wanted to stay on the gym, and to my surprise he started to bathe himself under the spray. He would flap his wings catching the water with the tip, and of course getting water every where.

Here is a video of him taking a bath. I am sure he will get better at it, but this is a great start.

This next video he gets up close and personal, and does say a few sentences. The very first one is not very clear, but it is - Hello. My name is DaVin'?

Then he says How does a cat go? Meow. And then How does a dog go?
